Laksa King. Just the name makes my mouth water. And I’m not even hungry.
I started coming to this Malaysian eatery back in the day when it was a little hole in the wall with fluorescent lighting and space for about twenty tables max. Now a couple years down the track and the King’s moved to a larger premises, softened its lights, added some bamboo design features and increased its staff numbers ten-fold. And for good reason. Come here pretty much any night of the week and there will be a queue snaking out the door and onto Pin Oak Crescent. The good news is that the service is lighting fast and you will have your food within five to ten minutes of ordering, so the wait times aren’t as bad as you’d think.
Is it the best laksa in Melbourne? Tough call, but it has to come close. In any case, if you’re in the area you shouldn’t miss it. My other favourites here are the chicken roti wraps and the roti beef chanai. Dishes range from around $10 (laksa is $9.80) to $25, and there’s a 10% discount if you eat and pay between 5pm and 6.30pm. BYO wine only, with a $5 corkage charge per bottle.
